Bodyboard Sizing Chart

What Size Bodyboard Do I Need?

For over 25 years, Nomad has helped Australian bodyboarders find the perfect board for their height, weight and local conditions.

Choosing the right bodyboard size is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. A board that’s too small can lack speed and float, while a board that’s too large can be difficult to control and manoeuvre.

At Nomad, we’ve been designing bodyboards for Australian conditions for over 25 years. Whether you’re buying your first board or upgrading to a high-performance PP core model, this guide will help you choose the perfect size.

As a general rule, a bodyboard should reach somewhere between your belly button and the bottom of your hips when standing upright.

However, height is only part of the equation. Your weight, skill level and the waves you ride should also influence your choice.

Find your perfect board size.

Height vs Weight

If you’re between sizes, your weight becomes important.

Choose the larger size if:

  • You’re a beginner.
  • You’re a heavier rider.
  • You surf smaller waves.
  • You want extra speed and float.
  • You ride drop knee regularly.

Choose the smaller size if:

  • You’re an experienced rider.
  • You surf steep, hollow waves.
  • You prefer maximum manoeuvrability.

Bodyboard Size by Skill Level

Beginner

We recommend sizing slightly larger.

A bigger board offers:

  • More float.
  • Easier wave catching.
  • Better stability.
  • Faster progression.

Intermediate

Choose the size that best suits your weight and local conditions.

Advanced

Experienced riders often fine tune their sizing depending on:

  • Wave type.
  • Riding style.
  • Competition requirements.
  • Personal preference.

Prone vs Drop Knee

Prone Riders

Most prone riders should follow the sizing chart.

Drop Knee Riders

Many drop knee riders prefer a slightly larger board for additional stability and projection.

PP vs D12 Core

Core material does not significantly change the recommended board size.

However:

PP Core

  • Lighter.
  • Faster.
  • More responsive.
  • Excellent for warmer water.

D12 Core

  • Slighty More flex than PP.
  • Great for colder conditions and those want a bit more natural flex in their board.
  • Smooth riding characteristics.

What If I’m Between Sizes?

This is one of our most common questions.

If you’re between two sizes:

Go Larger If:

  • You’re heavier.
  • You’re learning.
  • You ride smaller waves.
  • You want extra speed.

Go Smaller If:

  • You’re lighter.
  • You’re experienced.
  • You surf powerful waves.
  • You want maximum control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size bodyboard should I buy?

The correct size depends on your height, weight, skill level and local conditions. Use our sizing chart as a starting point.

Is a bigger bodyboard better?

Not necessarily.

A bigger board provides more speed and float, while a smaller board offers greater manoeuvrability.

Should kids ride larger boards?

Children should use a properly fitted board rather than buying a board to “grow into.”

Does body weight matter?

Absolutely.

Two riders of the same height may require different board sizes depending on their weight.

Can I use the same board in all conditions?

Yes, although experienced riders often own multiple boards for different conditions.
